Georgian 18K Yellow Gold and Enamel Mourning Ring, Circa 1815
Georgian 18K yellow gold and enamel mourning ring, circa 1815. This exceptional Georgian mourning ring was crafted in London in 1815 to commemorate John Tabor, who passed away on February 3, 1815, at the age of 86. The ring features a traditional black enamel memorial inscription with gold lettering—an established symbol of remembrance in early 19th-century England. The interior bears clear London hallmarks, including the maker's mark "JG," and date letter "T," firmly placing its creation in the late Georgian period. Mourning rings in this era were commissioned as deeply personal tributes, intended to be worn and passed down through generations.
The surname, date, and period correspond with the well-documented Tabor family of Essex, a long-established line whose history appears in contemporary records and personal diaries of the era. While definitive genealogical proof is unavailable, the details strongly suggest this ring commemorates a prominent member of that family.
Remarkably, this ring has survived alongside a later Victorian example honoring another Tabor family member, offering a rare glimpse into how remembrance traditions were preserved across generations.

"We have told everyone we know how much we have enjoyed the process with Walton's."
HARRISON & LAUREN
Walton's Jewelry has been a cherished part of my family's story for generations. They served my mom and dad with the same care and dedication that my husband and I have experienced over the years. If you're looking for a jeweler you can trust for life, look no further than Walton's.
We purchased an engagement ring from Walton's and received amazing customer service and guidance throughout this whole process. Even being 11 hours away from the physical store they provided all necessary certifications and details promptly to secure our interest and I am glad to have their help throughout all this! Highly recommend!
Love Walton’s! Everyone here is amazing, they know so much about antique jewelry and have the most beautiful pieces.
This is the most amazing store I have ever been in! Each person working is passionate and knowledgeable about each piece. There are absolutely no stores like it anywhere around. I look at antique jewelry almost daily online from stores all over the world and I made the trip to Walton’s to get a special piece and couldn’t be happier.
